How Oasis ruined our lives.

In 2009, the world, in my opinion, lost a key musical influence, the indie rock band Oasis broke up leaving thousands of fans, including myself, left speechless and heart broken. The band in 2009 consisted of the notoriously infamous Gallagher brothers, it is these two who both improved yet also destroyed the lives of many. Oasis released their first studio album ‘Defiantly Maybe’ in 1993. This album immediately received wide critical acclaim, their single ‘Some Might Say’ reached number one in the UK and Ireland music charts. This gave Oasis a wave fans that were hungry for more of the indie sound of Oasis. In 1995 Oasis released ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory.’ This album created a mainstream audience for Oasis with hits such as ‘Wonderwall’ and ‘Champagne Supernova’ and ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ which became known worldwide.

Why so rude? Oasis and Inappropriate Behavior.

As Oasis’s music grew in fame, the Gallagher Brothers became a topic of discussion in the public eye. They were constantly criticized in the media for their rude and inappropriate comments but also for their extremely pessimistic attitude towards other artists. In the eyes of many, Oasis’s indie sound changed the world of rock music forever. Their incredible fan base proves that they were successful in the production of music. However, the brothers constantly gave rock’n’ roll a bad name. Their excessive use of bad language and feeling of superiority among other artists caused them to be extremely unpopular in the media and also among the general public.

Although their unacceptable social behavior gave the band a bad name, it also put them at the height of their fame.By the late 90’s nearly every tabloid newspaper and numerous music magazines were putting  Oasis on the cover. They became cultural icons during the 90’s and also into the 00’s. Even people who hated their vulgar and disrespectful attitudes still could not help but enjoy hits such as ‘Wonderwall.’ Their music as well as their harsh comments became instantly recognizable. Liam Gallagher’s hairstyle and signature sunglasses became an iconic image in rock culture.

The Success of Indie Rock but the End of Era.

Not only did Oasis gain widespread attention from the media, their genres of Rock, Britpop and neo-psychedelic rock created a huge fan-base and also received critical acclaim from critics and other artists alike. They released a total of eight albums and won numerous awards including six Brit Awards, nine Q Awards and 3 Grammy nominations.Oasis dominated both the culture and music of Rock throughout the 90’s and the beginning of 00’s. However, there were always sibling spats between Noel and Liam Gallagher throughout the entirety of their career and this is what essentially led to their downfall. Real tension arised when Liam continuously failed to preform due to substance abuse, this left thousands of fans disappointed. Backstage fights occurred often and Noel at different stages announced he would leave Oasis. This became reality on the 28th of August the brothers had a backstage fight that resulted in two last-minute gig cancellations and a statement that Oasis “does not exist anymore”.Noel confirmed this two hours later, saying: “with some sadness and great relief…I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer.” This left thousands of fans devastated and heart-broken. The opportunity to see Oasis perform live was taken away from hundreds and the prospect of any more Oasis albums was quickly shattered with Noel stating “I don’t know what I’m doing but I’m not doing that.”

Oasis did indeed influence and change the lives of many, however, “some might say,” their break up ruined some people’s faith in music. Although Oasis did create a unique sound, I and many others may feel as though their ridiculous behavior proved to be selfish to fans and Oasis lovers around the world. The end of Oasis was bitter-sweet.
