Muse ‘Drones Tour’ at 3Arena Dublin Review

Muse melted the brains of every fan in the crowd of their ‘Drones Tour’ in the 3Arena Dublin on the 5th April 2016. ‘The Unsustainable Tour’ in 2012 left the audience in awe due to the powerful stage presence of lead guitarist and vocalist Matt Bellamy slamming mighty riffs, the exuberant and original stage production and the impressive laser light show. The ‘Unsustainable Tour’ was an experience that no Muse fan could forget. Matt stated that ‘The Drones Tour’ was going to be different  and after it was announced that Muse would be preforming on a rotating 360 degree stage, a massive hype spread among Muse fans worldwide. This announcement left much anticipation for their performance at the 3Arena due to the arena’s small size. Bellamy stated he had “something very special planned for Dublin”. This left us anxious and excited fans eager whilst lining up outside the doors of Gate 1. We were not left disappointed. Muse presented us with a breath taking and unforgettable performance.

As I entered the arena, I could immediately feel an atmosphere of excitement as masses of fans quickly raced to the barrier of the 360 degree stage which was placed in the center of the standing area. The supporting act ‘Nothing But Thieves’ delivered an entertaining distraction. They had fragments of Muse’s unique alternative sound and they seemed to please the hungry Muse fans. However, they  failed to keep the crowd’s interest. Half an hour after their performance the lights went out and Muse’s performance began.

The entire arena blacked out and the harmonious sound of Muse’s only acapella track ‘Drones’ filled the ears of the crowd whilst sixteen fake drones illuminated the arena. The crowd was silent as the peacefulness of ‘Drones’ calmed the entire arena. However, this tranquility was soon destroyed with the mighty and powerful opening riff of ‘Psycho.’ The lights blazed the as Bellamy came from right, smashing his guitar whilst the entire crowd erupted with screams. This was a fantastic opening of their show and set the electric atmosphere for the entire night.

Another new track ‘Reapers’ was played next and the crowd once again began moshing to Matt’s empowering guitar solos. Muse then returned to their roots with the well -loved oldie ‘Bliss’, this was a fantastic surprise for most fans. The set-list weaved flawlessly between golden hits such as ‘Supermassive Black hole’, ‘Uprising’ and ‘Starlight’, yet also satisfied any die -hard fan by playing old classics like ‘Citizen Erased’, ‘Map of the Promlamatique’ and ‘Take a Bow’.

The stage production a success. The huge 360 degree stage was a mind-blowing part of the show. The drummer Dom Howard was placed in the center of the stage, rotating throughout the performance. Whilst bassist Chris Wolstenholme and Bellamy moved freely across the stage giving every fan a chance to see the performance. Several glowing drones moved throughout the arena; the laser light show was well choreographed  and matched beautifully with Muse’s performance. Huge white balloons were released during ‘Starlight’ and exploded with glittering confetti. The most impressive aspect of the concert was the five metre reaper that glided over the crowd, adding to the overall atmosphere of the fantastic set production. Muse presented their fans with an unforgettable experience, and their ‘Drones Tour’ has truly set the bar for all other tours to come.
